Compositionally, I don't think you're ever supposed to crop somone's arm off in that manner. EXCEPT that in this photo it takes you a minute to realize that it's an arm. The fact that it is balanced against the diagonal rail behind it makes it work.

ahahaha what an amazingly adorable child. I agree that the arm cropping is odd, but it doesn't take anything away from it and it looks fine. It only looks weird if you focus on it, and with her making that face you generally don't. haha.
